Registration Levels

Registered Sign Language Interpreter (RSLI)

A RSLI is a fully qualified interpreter. They have completed all the formal training in both language and interpreting technique to become a British Sign Language (BSL)/English interpreter. This interpreter has been identified as being able to work safely. They can work in any field of interpreting, but are encouraged to train if wishing to undertake a special area, for example court work. A RSLI is also encouraged to continue with their professional development – CPD.

You may have also have heard of the Member of the Register of Sign Language Interpreters (MRSLI), this is the old name for the same RSLI category

Trainee Sign Language Interpreter

A Trainee Sign Language Interpreter is in training to become a RSLI and is encouraged to work with a mentor (see ASLIl link). The types of interpreting they can work in is limited. A trainee will have either finished BSL language to Level 6 or will be still learning. They will not have completed the interpreter programme.

Registration with the NRCPD

To be able to register with the NRCPD an individual must prove:

  • the appropriate level of qualification or that they are working towards the next level
  • that they follow the Code of Conduct
  • they have completed a police Check (CRB enhanced disclosure)
  • they have professional insurance
  • they are happy to be subject to the complaints procedure
